Key West's Literary Heritage ...
Key West is one of America's most important literary gathering places and has been so since the late 1920's. Ernest Hemingway was the first writer to attain celebrity status when Life magazine documented his exploits on and off the island. Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost, John Hersey, James Merrill, and a host of other writers have since called Key West "home". Today, Key West claims more writers per capita than any other city in America.

Key West is America's tropical paradise. It is also America's premier literary destination. Visitors are attracted to Key West by the lush tropical landscape, the city's rich historical legacy, its intimate scale (the island is only 2 x 4 miles; Old Town proper constitutes 10 square blocks), its glorious weather (the only city in America that has never seen frost or snow), and a zany, anything-goes atmosphere that continues to inspire creative artists and writers.

The Key West Literary Seminar ...
For over twenty four years, the Key West Literary Seminar has been dedicated to the investigation and celebration of the written word and to the support of American writers. The Seminar strives to preserve our literary heritage by promoting dialogue among writers, scholars, and readers at its annual January seminar and through panel discussions, readings, and writing workshops. The Seminar has earned a reputation as one of the premier literary gatherings in America and has become known for presenting provocative conversations about what really matters in American literature.

Each January the Seminar investigates a different literary theme through lectures, panel presentations, readings, informal gatherings and discussions. The annual gathering is strictly limited in size to retain intimacy. The Seminar provides a perfect blend of serious literary discussion and festive Key West parties. The Seminar attracts a highly sophisticated international audience of avid readers and writers. Small writers' workshops accompany each year's seminar.

Readings, lectures, and panel presentations are held at the historic San Carlos Institute, located at 516 Duval Street in the heart of Old Town, within walking distance of most hotels and guesthouses. The restoration of the present building was completed in 1992. Dedicated to the preservation of Cuban cultural heritage, the institute houses a library of books and historical documents related to Cuba and the Florida Keys. The auditorium features excellent site lines and good acoustics. Afternoon receptions are held in the gardens of the Audubon House and at the Kent Gallery. Evening parties are held at the Custom House Museum and at the Key West Lighthouse. Evening parties feature delicious full course catered meals and a complimentary bar. Dress to all events is Key West casual.
